Nicky Grace
Independent Midwife
Welcome. I’m Nicky Grace, an independent midwife practising in Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, Derby, Derbyshire, Leicester, Leicestershire and throughout the East Midlands. It would be an honour to walk alongside you throughout the transformational times of pregnancy, birth and early motherhood.
Your body, your choices, your birth
I offer independent pregnancy and birth services throughout the East Midlands, within approximately one hour’s drive of my home in Nottingham. If you would like to have an undisturbed home birth, respect for your choices, and a midwife who is on your side – please get in touch.
What do I do?
I am a midwife and that means ‘with woman’. I love to support clients to make the right choices for them as individuals and as a family. From my work as a midwife and from many years of helping to run the Nottingham Home Birth Group, I have come to believe that each woman is the expert in herself and her own body. If you choose me to be your midwife, I will be there to talk things through and to help you deepen your trust in yourself. Sometimes it can be helpful to look up any research evidence and guidelines that might be available. I am familiar with research (I have a master’s degree in research methods for health), so I can find relevant studies and help clients to evaluate how good the research is, and if it applies to their situation. But whatever the research or guidelines say, only you can make the right decision for you and I will support you unconditionally, without judgement.
I love to work closely not only with mothers, but also fathers. I cherish and value fathers and it is a great joy to me to hold a space for a couple to grow together at this special time.
I work not only with mothers and fathers, but it is my pleasure to walk with same-sex couples and support them as they walk their path to parenthood.
I work independently of the NHS and I am registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and practise within the NMC Code.
I have three care packages for parents: pregnancy, birth and postnatal.
If you choose pregnancy care, visits are carried out in your own home, without rush. We discuss anything you wish and I can draw on my years of experience as a midwife to help you make the right decisions for you. I can support you through the changes your body makes as you adapt to growing new life within your womb. If you wish to have a home birth you can book me as your independent midwife. When it’s time to give birth, you will have me on call so you know who is coming. And if you choose me as your postnatal midwife, I will visit frequently in the early days, providing skilled support for feeding and caring for your baby, and making sure your recovery is optimal. During this time you can call me any time, day or night, for support with feeding or anything else.
Midwifery Partnership
I am work with a wonderful partner, Sarah Marsden, who is a doula and birthkeeper. I had the privilege of being Sarah’s midwife for one of her births, and Sarah has also had freebirths. Sarah is an experienced birthkeeper, placenta specialist and birth photographer. If you book for independent midwifery at home, Sarah will also be on call for your birth. Both Sarah and I are very aware that it is vital not to disturb a woman in labour. We’ll discuss this at antenatal visits, and ensure that you have the right level of support for you. Placenta and photography services aren’t included but why not explore if you would like to add them to your package? Additionally, I work with a number of other independent midwives who provide backup services for each other. Do give me a call to find out more about how it works.

Years of Experience as an Independent Midwife
I qualified as a midwife in 2000, and have been practising independently (outside the NHS) since 2006, attending mainly home births. I was a midwifery lecturer for two years 2022-2024 but have finished that role and am now able to offer full independent midwifery clinical services again as part of the Zest scheme. I am registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council and the Royal College of Nursing.
Visits are family affairs. Teddy is fascinated to learn how his sister will born!
Each birth is unique
You are the expert in yourself and it is a privilege for me to be part of this significant time of your life. My aim is that we develop a relationship of trust, so you have the best possible pregnancy and birth experience.
Kind words from previous midwifery clients
Nim and Rik
We just wanted to say a HUGE thank you for all the support, care and love throughout our pregnancy, birth and after birth of our baby boy … you are totally AMAZING and we are very lucky to have found you and have you in our lives during a very important part of our journey … we hope you are able to join us on special events to continue to watch our boy grow up, he needs to know the fantastic person who helped his parents all the way for his safe arrival. We couldn’t imagine this journey without you.
Jane and Steve
My previous births were traumatic and I needed to find someone who would support a gentle approach. My birth choices would not have been possible with the NHS and the connection and trust that I built with Nicky allowed me to have a peaceful but powerful birth.
Sarah and Andy
We had 2 fantastic births thanks to you and your knowledge & support (and obviously the efforts of my hardcore better half)
I did the easy bit and just watched.
